Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ryuichi Sakamoto was a composer, producer, artist, and environmental activist born in Tokyo. Making his debut in 1978 with the album Thousand Knives. Sakamoto's diverse résumé includes pioneering electronic works in the legendary techno group Yellow Magic Orchestra, producing globally-inspired pop albums and numerous classical compositions, two operas, and nearly 45 original film scores for directors, including Bernardo Bertolucci, Pedro Almodóvar, Brian De Palma, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. His film soundtracks have won prestigious awards, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, and many more. Sakamoto's activism was widespread to include various environmental conservation efforts and promoting denuclearization and world peace. After 3/11 in Japan, he became a strong voice of support for the victims of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown in Fukushima.

Sakamoto made considerable contributions to the art world with both solo and collaborative installations and multi-piece exhibitions presented in galleries and museums worldwide. Most recently, M WOODS Museum (Chengdu) presents Ryuichi Sakamoto | SOUND AND TIME (Aug. 18th, 2023 – Jan. 5th, 2024), a comprehensive collection spanning 30 years devoted to Sakamoto's artworks in various media, centering around 8 large-scale sound installations.

In 2017, the documentary Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA (Stephen Nomura Schible) was released, coinciding with the release of his renowned 14th solo album, “async". Additionally, Sakamoto presented unique performances at the Park Avenue Armory (NYC), later released worldwide as the film "Ryuichi Sakamoto: async Live at the Park Avenue Armory".

Premiering at the Holland Festival 2021, Sakamoto and longtime collaborator Shiro Takatani presented a new theater piece, TIME.

TIME continues to tour the world, bringing the artist duo’s last collaboration to long-time and new fans alike.

On January 17th, 2023, his 71st birthday, Ryuichi released “12", his 15th solo album. The new album is a collection of 12 songs selected from musical sketches Sakamoto recorded like a sound diary during his two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away in March 2023 at the age of 71.

Shiro Takatani
EXHIBITION

Born in 1963, Takatani is one of the founding members of the artist collective Dumb Type, which was established in 1984. Besides Dumb Type, Takatani began a parallel solo career in 1998. In his solo activities, he created his own performance La Chambre Claire (premiered at Theater der Welt, Germany in 2008), CHROMA (premiered at Biwako Hall Center for the Performing Arts Shiga in 2012) and ST/LL (premiered at Le Volcan – Scène Nationale du Havre, France in 2015). His first retrospective solo exhibition, “Camera Lucida,” was held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in 2013. Dumb Type’s first large-scale solo exhibition, “DUMB TYPE | ACTIONS + REFLECTIONS,” was held at Centre Pompidou-Metz (France) in 2018 and Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2019-20. The latest theater piece by Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani, TIME was premiered at Holland Festival in 2021. In 2022, Dumb Type was selected to exhibit in the Japan Pavilion at Venice Biennale and created a new installation 2022, welcoming Ryuichi Sakamoto as a new member. Also, Dumb Type solo exhibition at Haus der Kunst in Munich was held in the same year. “Japan Pavilion Exhibition in Tokyo—From the 59th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia | Dumb Type, 2022: remap” was held at the Artizon Museum in Tokyo in 2023. Next year, Takatani’s new performance will be premiered at ROHM Theatre Kyoto in February, and TIME will be presented at New National Theatre Tokyo and ROHM Theatre Kyoto in March-April.

In addition to his own activities, he has collaborated with many artists in Japan and abroad, and is active in a wide range of activities creating remixes, installations and producing.

Throughout their 30 year career, Buffalo Daughter have been hailed as one of the best live bands not only in Japan, but in the world. Always searching for new musical styles, each of the eight albums they've released to date has its own unique character. The most recent album is We Are The Times in 2021.

Seiichi Yamamoto

Musician, writer, and artist born in Hyogo prefecture, residing in Kyoto. Composer and guitarist for BOREDOMS (released from Warner USA) from 1986 to 2001. Since, he has been active worldwide in various genres, including ROVO, Rashinban, Omoide Hatoba, PARA, MOST, TEEM, Ya-to-i, NOVO-TONO, CHAOS JOCKEY, and others. Especially in the `90s to 2000s, he performed in many international music festivals including Lollapalooza, and Glastonbury. Toured with alternative rock bands such as Sonic Youth and Nirvana as a BOREDOMS member. Major works as a musician include the ambient “Crown of Fuzzy Groove” (solo), “SOUL DISCHARGE 99” (BOREDOMS), “Song Line” (Rashinban), “Suichu JOE” (Omoide Hatoba), “FLAGE” (ROVO), “Shiawase no Sumika” (Seiichi Yamamoto & PHEW), etc. Worked on the soundtracks of “Mind Game” animation directed by Masaaki Yuasa, “Ichi the Killer” by Takashi Miike, and “Adrenaline Drive” by Shinobu Yaguchi amongst others. As an essayist, he has contributed to various media including “Bungakukai”, where his “Tsurezuregusa” was selected as the best essay of the year in 2008. Published a delusional essay series “Ginga” in 1999, “Yun” in 2009, and “Imayura” in 2014. He is also an active painter and photographer, regularly presenting his works in solo exhibitions and in his own artwork.

Terry Riley

Composer/Musician. Born in California on June 24th, 1935, 88 years old. A musical giant who has always made new works of striking originality in the past, present, and future. His early revolutionary classic “in C” (1964) continues to shine as a milestone in minimal music, and“A Rainbow in Curved Air” (1969) is a timeless masterpiece of psychedelic music which gave a huge impact on ambient music that emerged later. His innovative activities since the 1960s such as “All-Night Concert” became the prototype for rave parties, and his Indian-influenced works not only became the prototype for sampling/looping but also club culture, have transcended genres and continue to be a cornerstone of the international music scene, shedding lights to the future.
Many artists including Yokoo Tadanori, Joe Hisaishi, and Jim Jarmusch have declared to be big fans of Riley.
He resides in Yamanashi prefecture since 2020. He also holds a monthly raga class “Kirana East” in Kamakura.

Mariko Asabuki
READING

Novelist. Known for her multilayered depictions of time. Born in 1984. Made her debut with Trajectory in 2009. Became the youngest winner of the Prix des Deux Magots for the same work in 2010. Awarded the Akutagawa Prize for Kikotowa. Other works include Timeless. She has also carried out reading of her works across multiple genres, including at the Centre Pompidou-Metz Japanorama exhibition.
